Tool to Classify Detergent and Cleaning Products for CLPDid you know that there is a new tool to determine the EU CLP classification of detergent and cleaning products?

Under CLP, which is the EU adaptation of GHS, companies have three options to classify their products: 1) Calculate the classification by using the classification of ingredients; 2) Use the classification of similar products to derive the classification; 3) Use test data.

AISE, the international Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products, launched DetNet, which is the Detergent Industry Network for CLP Classification. AISE aims to provide through DetNet a common industry approach to classify and label detergent and cleaning products for skin and eye effects.

The CLP Regulation allows suppliers in an industry sector to cooperate through the formation of a network or by other means to share data and expertise when classifying substances and mixtures for CLP. DetNet aims to build on that concept by allowing manufacturers of detergent and cleaning products to perform the following:

  • Share data and expertise under the umbrella of an “Industry Classification Network” and apply CLP bridging principles and expert judgment. This would prevent each mixture from having to be tested individually.
  • Populate the DetNet database with in vitro test data used for the classification of detergent mixtures.

Thus DetNet seeks to share test data and expert judgment among manufacturers/suppliers of detergent and cleaning products, in order to allow for the classification of products in line with CLP principles.

AISE says that DetNet builds on the bridging principles from CLP and allows a company to classify an untested mixture by comparing it with similar tested mixtures using “Reference Formulations” from the database. Reference Formulations are made available and use a fixed format that provides sufficient details to enable comparison of mixtures and application of bridging principles, while protecting confidential business information.
